An Honest Conversation

If you didn’t hear the news, HERE LIES LOVE will close this Sunday after only 4 months on Broadway.
Even though many Filipinos feel proud about our talented performers being featured on the world's main stage, many harbor conflicting feelings about the glorification of Imelda Marcos, the former First Lady of the Philippines, who is considered a highly controversial figure.
After my review of the musical, I was brought to the attention of a blog article that I couldn’t help but feel was speaking directly to me. Written by Caro Mangosing, creator and founder of Vinta Gallery, her article shares a perspective that hits home as to why this musical can be considered problematic for our community.
I reached out to Caro to see if she would have a conversation with me. I was fascinated by her strength and wanted to learn more about this woman who seemed fearless in her expression of Filipina identity.
Our time together opened my eyes to the importance of knowing our history and how that knowledge can be the fuel to empower our perspective and our actions today.
