The Paradiesvogel

There’s a beautiful German metaphor called the “Paradiesvogel” translated as the “Bird of Paradise.”
The meaning is wonderful because it entails the story of a colorful bird that isn’t afraid to show its true colors. Essentially, the metaphor represents a person who stands out - an eccentric.
And very much like a bird of paradise, this extraordinary creature captivates the attention and awe of those who are lucky enough to witness its beauty.
The “Paradiesvogel” metaphor is my Filipina Mom to a T.
In today’s episode, I share with you an interview I did with my mother this past Saturday. We met up at the Philippine Independence Day Celebration held in Phoenix, Arizona and had the best time together.
Every year, my mother dresses up (sometimes twice in the same day) in some form of dress that represents the flag of the Philippines and the United States.
Last year, she threw in the Arizona flag for good measure.
“She EXTRA,” is what Gen Z would say.
That’s my mom. And this is one of the many reasons why I am so grateful she is in my life.
She has never been afraid to authentically show her true colors, in all respects, for better or for worse.
That is what makes her brilliant. And Filipina to her core.
Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan ng Pilipinas! Happy Philippine Independence Day!
