Ancient Art of BAYBAYIN

Before the Spanish colonized the Philippines in 1521, the people of the Islands had their own beautiful writing system known as BAYBAYIN.
With roots in Sanskrit, this ancient writing system was eventually replaced by the Latin Alphabet and left to be forgotten as generations of Filipinos stopped using it to communicate.
Today, Filipinos are rediscovering this "dead" script with stunning artistic expressions.
One such Filipino artist is my friend, Mark Libatique, who I met up with in New York City.
He shared with me the history of Filipino Baybayin and how the art of this Philippine writing system is evolving.
