Do you believe in coincidences?
I think everything happens for a reason, including the rare “coincidence” of running into my good friend Val Roxas* in the least likely of places – Las Vegas!
Without controlling or planning our schedules, Val miraculously ended up visiting the same crazy place I was visiting on exactly the same weekend. AND she brought in one of her closest friends, Ruby, to round out our gathering of Filipina sisterhood.
What’s really important about this chance rendezvous is twofold.
One, I really needed a friend to lean on during my time of burnout recovery.
Burnout is mysterious in that everything feels wrong, added to the strong sense that you don’t know what the heck to do about it. So having someone like Val in my corner was really necessary, and getting to be with her in 3D was the added boost of healing my soul needed.
Secondly, our time together with Ruby brought about some really fascinating conversation about Filipino identity. We talked about our relationship with our parents, our health, and our community.
This led us to the often ignored but ever present topic of “CRAB MENTALITY.”
